The problem

Asset life extension cases quote the date with the most study behind it

The platform is past its design life and the board wants more years. Each discipline engineer reviews their own items and signs, usually in the form of no issues found. The structural reanalysis gives the only hard date, so that date becomes the platform's date.

What no one owns falls between the reports. A safety system passes each proof test while its spares run out. A caisson inspection deferred twice turns into a sentence. The cost is a signature on a date the evidence does not reach, or years of production lost to a late answer.

The Problem Today

Running past design life rests on partial records read one discipline at a time, so the earliest limit stays hidden.

7,400
hours to read 148,000 documents by hand, at 3 minutes each our estimate

Read by hand today

  • Inspections

  • Tests pass, parts run outA healthy system with no spares reads as fine
  • Gaps become sentencesA deferred inspection is written up as no issues

The Solution

  1. All disciplines readSix disciplines read together, with each limit cited to its page
  2. Evidence stops, bar stopsPast the last proof the chart shows unknown, never a safe color
  3. The weakest yearOne earliest limit, with what would move it, rough cost and proof needed
  4. A signed conditional caseEngineers sign items, one authority signs, agents watch conditions

Built-in controls

  • Each item has a maker and a different checker
  • Agents do not sign, and do not change a date
  • Each limit opens its source page, with the passage marked

What You Get

The technical authority decides on one honest date, and everyone can see what holds it.

  • Each limit has its pageThe register cites a source for every life item
  • Conditions that biteA missed clock stops the case taking effect
  • Ready for regulator and insurerOne record, two files, each open gap stated
Before lunch, on the platform case

An asset life extension case read across six disciplines before lunch

A fixed steel platform finished its thirty-year design life, an interim extension is running, and the owner wants 2036. The full case is due to the regulator in weeks. Seventy of seventy-two items are already signed. Nobody has laid them side by side.

demoThe platform, its engineers and its records are sample data, invented for this walk.

  1. 0109:00

The only date anyone quotes is 2041, and five bars carry no date at all

    Life extension lead

The horizon runs from first oil to 2046 with one bar per discipline. Structure is solid to its fatigue date of 2041. Pressure systems, risers and caissons, control and safety, electrical and records each read own items signed, no platform date. The owner's 2036 sits on the axis. The lead presses the one button on the screen: find the weakest year.

  2. 0209:05

The bars fill in as each agent finishes its reading

    Life extension lead

Records are sorted first: 146,484 documents read and 1,516 held. Then 70 readings are lined up side by side: pressure 2037, electrical 2034, records 2034. The obsolescence check finds that logic solver orders closed and maker repairs ended, with 9 modules left at 3.5 used a year. The gap check finds a caisson last read in 2011, then deferred twice.

  3. 0309:08

Nothing supports a date past 2029, and the chart says why

    Life extension lead

The headline moves from 2041 to nothing past 2029. Structure still holds, but spares for the shutdown logic solver run out first, and the caisson's evidence ended in 2011. Those two bars turn to hatching marked unknown, which the chart refuses to draw as fine. A red weakest-year line crosses all six, and the agents' findings sit below with their citations.

  4. 0409:10

Obsolescence hides behind proof tests that pass every time

    Electrical and instrument engineer

All 214 shutdown functions passed, because failed modules were swapped from stores. The spares table puts each part's stock over six years of use: 148 digital input modules installed, 9 in store, 21 used. At 3.5 a year they run out in 2029. With 15 refurbished modules, digital outputs run out first, in 2033. New supply can only be refurbished.

  5. 0509:17

Three moves for $3.28M carry the case to June 2032, if the board agrees

    Life extension lead

The weakest year lists six moves with what each changes, the evidence it needs, an owner and a rough cost. The lead ticks the spares, the rope access survey and the sleeve, and the case date moves to June 2032, twelve months inside the next limit. It holds only if the board sanctions the $18.60M solver replacement. He proposes; nothing changes until the authority signs.

  6. 0609:26

A remaining life assessment that admits it is a projection

    Structural engineer

Item RC-06 opens on its source tabs: the 2011 inspection page, two deferrals, the strength check, the company standard and the interim measures. The sum is shown in full, 0.574 in against 0.375 in minimum, reaching 2030 if the old rate held. The company screening rate says survey within 90 days. He accepts the reading as unknown past 2030 and writes why.

  7. 0709:41

She checks what he signed, on the record he signed it on

    Technical authority

The structural engineer's signature and note now sit on the item. Once the lead has submitted the case, the authority opens the same caisson record herself. Her panel reads: you have this record open, check it or send it back. A send-back clears both the signature and the check. She checks the caisson, then does the same on the logic solver item.

  8. 0809:50

Who agreed, what the case says, and what still blocks the file

    Technical authority

The case file states the date, the three named conditions and that the owner's 2036 is beyond what the evidence holds. Who agreed is listed with the item each person accepted and checked. Every chapter reads all checked. Under issue the file, the blocks are named: her own signature, two bulk batches of new evidence, and three file gaps. She can sign, send back, refuse or add a condition.

  9. 0909:53

Signed to June 2032, with nothing past 2029 on evidence alone

    Technical authority

Her signature changes the headline: a conditional case to June 2032, with 3 conditions, taking effect only if conditions 1 and 2 hold. Gold hatching marks the conditional stretch on the two bars that set it. The file stays unissued while 3 gaps are open, and the condition clocks start at once.

Six bars, six reasons each one stops where it does

After the run, each discipline's date comes from one item and its page. Two of them have no date at all.

After the signature

Conditions, gaps and 31 years of records behind the signed case

What the engineers and the auditor open after the signature, on the same platform record.

Conditions with clocksEach condition has an owner, a due date, two warnings and a stated consequence. A missed survey or spares buy means the case does not take effect.
Where the evidence stopsSeven gaps, each with what would fill it, who owns it and the days left. Two are held by conditions; three block the file until found or disclosed.
Thirty-one years of records148,000 documents by discipline and year. A thin square is a thin record. Hatched squares are years where planned reports cannot be found.
The agent runEach agent's plan, sources, confidence and the person it passes the work to. Confidence figures are sample data.
Sign-off across disciplines72 of 72 items signed and checked. New evidence arrives in bulk batches, and the checker opens a sample of her own before accepting.
Audit trailThe run, the proposal, each acceptance and check with its reason, the signature and the clocks starting, in order. It cannot be edited.

Seven readers

Agents read and price the moves, and the dates stay with engineers

They gather, read, compare and watch. They do no engineering analysis.

Records gatherer

Opens each file and sorts it by discipline.

  • Never discards a record or calls one superseded
Life evidence reader

Finds each limit and quotes its page, working only the sum the report states.

  • Never does engineering analysis
Obsolescence checker

Puts maker notices, stores balances and failures together.

  • Never accepts a spare for a safety system
Gap finder

Compares planned with done and marks where evidence stops.

  • Never fills a gap with an assumption
Weakest year finder

Finds the earliest limit and the moves that would shift it.

  • Never changes a date
Case writer

Drafts the file from signed items.

  • Never signs
  • Never softens a limit
Condition watcher

Watches each condition's clock and warns its owner twice before it falls due.

  • Never waives or extends a condition

What technical authorities ask about an asset life extension case

What is asset life extension?

Asset life extension is the case for running a facility past its design life. Here agents read the records of every discipline, line up each life item with its limit and cited page, and show one earliest limit on a single time axis. Engineers sign their items, and a technical authority signs a conditional case.

What does this add to an asset life extension study by a consultant?

A study ends as a report. This keeps the record live: each limit stays tied to its page, conditions carry clocks after signature, and a missed condition changes the state of the case. Structural reanalysis stays where it is, as one of the inputs.

Why do spares set the date when the proof tests pass?

A system can pass each test only because failed cards are swapped from stores. When the maker stops supply, stock over the rate of use gives a run-out date that no test shows. The obsolescence check puts notices, stores and failures together to find it.

What does unknown mean on the chart?

Each bar is solid to its last measurement, lighter where it is only projected from that measurement, and hatched past that. Hatching means the evidence stops there. A projection from an old reading is shown as a projection and never counted as a finding.

Can the case be signed while gaps are still open?

The authority can sign once each item is signed and checked, no objection is open and each condition has been opened. Gaps still open are named on her signature, and the file cannot be issued until they are filled or a disclosure is signed.

What happens if a condition is missed?

The condition watcher warns the owner ahead of the due date. If the survey or the spares are not confirmed in time, the case does not take effect. If the board does not sanction the solver replacement, the case ends at the next annual review.

Does it cover aging and life extension beyond offshore platforms?

The sample here is a fixed offshore platform. The same reading across disciplines applies to any facility past its design basis, with the disciplines and the limits set to that facility.
